More Fox Film Noir

Leading the March release of Fox Noir titles is Otto Preminger’s moody melodrama, “Daisy Kenyon” starring Joan Crawford, Dana Andrews and Henry Fonda. ‘Kenyon’ was Darryl Zanuck’s answer to Crawford’s Oscar-winning turn in ‘Mildred Pierce’ for Warner Brothers. Photographed by Leon Shamroy (who found great fame with the Technicolor masterpiece, ‘The Black Swan’ – and who’s career spanned the silent era through to 1968’s ‘Planet of the Apes’) Preminger’s movie has all the trappings of a Noir thriller wrapped around a powerful woman in a love triangle.

Daisy Kenyon (Crawford) is in love with Dan O’Mara (Dana Andrews) who is married, and realizing that he’ll never be free for her, she decides to marry the Peter Lapham (Henry Fonda). But Daisy’s love life becomes complicated when O’Mara files for divorce and pursues her.

Nunnally Johnson had been a successful producer before making his debut as director with ‘Black Widow.’ Two of Fox’s hottest actresses starred in this Noir classic, the stunning Gene Tierney and Ginger Rogers. When struggling actress Nancy (Peggy Ann Garner) is found dead by Iris Denver (Gene Tierney), her husband, Peter Denver (Van Heflin) becomes a prime suspect – along with Brian (Reginald Gardner) who had been illicitly seeing the actress. George Sanders plays the police inspector trying to find who the murderer is.

Jeanne Crain and Michael Rennie star in the atmospheric, ocean-liner set ‘Dangerous Crossing.’ On her honeymoon, Jeanne Crain discovers her husband has gone missing. After desperately searching the ship, it becomes apparent that he was never on-board – indeed, that her ticket was made out in her maiden name and her husband may never existed. It is the kindly ship’s doctor, Michael Rennie, who lends his support to her.

All three movies arrive on DVD for the very first time, featuring great new transfers and featurettes. ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Dangerous Crossing’ both include an isolated score track featuring Lionel Newman’s scores for both.
